ショーン・ステューシー(Shawn)はもともとカリフォルニアのラグナビーチの地元の人、友人のためにサーフボードのシェーバーをしていた。

1980年、「Tee」と呼ばれるTシャツ、ショートパンツ、サーフボードに走り書きしていたロゴ(自身のグラフィティ風タグ用サインのロゴ)をプリントして、販売したのが始まり。
